The Homer Mariner Park Habitat restoration Project originated with a feasibilitystudy conducted by the City of Homer in 1997 to investigate the possibility of getting funding to restore the degraded intertidal habitat in Mariner Park Lagoon, located at the base of the Homer Spit and near the Homer Airport. Initial findings suggested there were opportunities for a community-based restoration project that would benefit both the intertidal community and the shorebirds that use the area during spring and fall migration. In April 1998, an application was made to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) Trustee Council and funding was approved to develop a project with the goal of restoring the intertidal community damaged as a result of the spill. The principle objective of this project was to develop a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document that would provide a feasible project to restore or rehabilitate the intertidal community of the lagoon. This project was to enhance, preserve and protect a diverse feeding habitat for migrating shorebirds and to enhance the recreational use of the area in an environmentally compatible manner.
