Effect of Phone Chassis on Handset Antenna Performance

This report summarizes the work at the IRC Radio Laboratory during Jan. 1, 1998-Jan. 31, 2000 concerning the effect of the mobile phone chassis on the performance of small handset antennas. In the work, a resonant circuit model is introduced for the antenna-chassis-combination. Theoretical results obtained with the model indicate that at 900 MHz the contribution of the antenna element to the radiated power is small, typically below 10%. Thus the antenna element works mainly as a matching element which couples to the low-Q resonance of the chassis. The most of the radiation is produced by the currents of the chassis.
