SuperPave Overlay of Sand Anti-Fracture Layer over PCCP

This project on Route I-29 in Holt County was constructed during the summer of1998 in District 1. The project consisted of using a new technology, which involved placing a sand anti-fracture (SAF) layer. The SAF layer is placed between a Portland Cement Concrete pavement (PCCP) and an asphalt overlay. The purpose of the SAF layer is to retard reflective cracking in asphalt overlays over PCCP and reduce initial PCC pavement repair cost. If successful, the SAF layer will extend the service life of a pavement and may justify decreasing the amount of original pavement repair and/or the thickness of an asphalt overlay. The project was also Missouri's first Superpave project to be implemented in District 1. Information regarding the design, construction, and implementation of SuperPave in the project can be found in Appendix A of this report.
