Pharmacy Costs: Budgeting for the New Millennium. A Seminar Developed for theWestern Medicaid Pharmacy Administrator's Association. Held in San Antonio, Texas on October 4, 2000
The rapid rise in drug expenditures coupled with the potential cost and healthbenefits of pharmaceuticals creates dual goals for Medicaid agencies. They must both promote appropriate access and control costs. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's User Liaison Program has developed this half day seminar for the Texas Department of Health to provide Medicaid managers the information they need to develop and implement strategies that will work in their States. As a result of attending this workshop, participants should be better able to: Understand the causes of the growth in Medicaid prescription drug expenditures and the relative contribution of each to the rapid growth of the last decade; Identify the major options available to State Medicaid agencies for controlling costs and ensuring appropriate access; Predict, based on the experiences of two states, how a range of strategies might play out in the participants' own states - what difficulties they may encounter in implementing each strategy and what results they can expect.
