Combustion of Oil and Water-in-Oil Emulsion Layers Supported on Water for the period 4/1/98 to 5/31/00. Final Report

The goal of the research program was to broaden the current understanding of combustion of oil and water-in-oil emulsion layers on water, and then apply that knowledge to further the acceptance and use of in-situ burning cleanup technique. The idea is to define, and possibly widen, the window of opportunity for the application of in-situ burning as a primary response countermeasure for oil spill cleanup. The specific tasks were (1) to conduct burn tests on emulsions of three oils, diesel, Milne Point crude (MPU) and Alaska North Slope crude (ANS), for a range of external heat fluxes, water content in the emulsions, and weathering; and (2) to develop a mathematical model for the process.
