Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. The Communities; in Their Own Voices

What emerges from a review of the rural and tribal applications is a picture oflarge geographic areas with relatively few trained service providers, very little money to pay those who exist, and major transportation barriers to getting providers and consumers together. Everyone is understandably alarmed by the dramatic increase in substance abuse and violent crime among children and adolescents. In some areas, it appears that educational and employment resources have been lacking for so long that relatively few youth and adults have developed competencies that will help them climb out of the multi-generational poverty they are now caught in. Those who have done so and are now seeking help for others are clearly deserving of support.
