Two Sides of Calaveras Ridge Mountain Life in 20th Century New Mexico

This primarily an oral history, an oral history that began as a small addendum toan archaeological survey. The project has as it's focus the western of the Jemez Mountains, along the last unpaved portions of New Mexico State Route 126, the Cuba-Los Alamos road. What had begun as archaeology became a kind of landscape oral history, a microcosm of geography during the first half of the 20th century. The contents of this study covers a period beginning in the late 19th century into the 1950's. Oral testimonies touch on a wide range of subjects that include sheep and cattle raising, logging, homesteading, travel, tourism and life in the mountains.
