The report presents 1998 period infant mortality statistics from the linkedbirth/infant death data set (linked file) by a variety of maternal and infant characteristics. This report presents infant mortality data by race and Hispanic origin of the mother, birth weight, period of gestation, sex of infant, plurality, trimester of pregnancy prenatal care began, maternal age, maternal educational attainment, live-birth order, marital status, mother's place of birth, maternal smoking during pregnancy, age at death, and underlying cause of death.
