New Data for Dynamic Analysis: The Business Information Tracking Series (BITS)

This publication describes the Business Information Tracking Series (BITS), alongitudinal data file funded and developed by the U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy with the cooperation of the Bureau of the Census. Formerly called the Longitudinal Establishment and Enterprise Microdata (LEEM) file, the BITS file contains more than 10 million separate business records with more than 6 million records for each year from 1989 through 1996. For each business establishment, the BITS file provides such data as Census File Number, Standard Industrial Classification number, start-year employment, annual payroll, location (state, city, county), and parent firm. In addition to the text, 19 tables offer descriptions and basic configurations of business data from the BITS file.
