Mid-Year 1999 Preliminary Emergency Department Data from the Drug Abuse WarningNetwork

The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) is a national probability survey ofhospitals with emergency departments (EDs) conducted annually by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This survey is designed to capture data on ED episodes that are induced by or related to the use of an illegal drug or the nonmedical use of a legal drug. This report focuses on preliminary estimates of drug-related ED episodes and mentions for the first half of 1999, with comparisons to the first half of 1998.
