摘要

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is required under section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to conduct consultations which consider the impacts of ocean salmon fisheries to salmon species which are listed as threatened or endangered under the ESA. NMFS recently added to the list of threatened and endangered species two distinct population segments, or evolutionarily significant units (ESU), of California chinook salmon: the Central Valley spring-run chinook ESU and the California coastal chinook ESU (64 FR 50394, September 16, 1999). The ocean salmon fisheries in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off Washington, Oregon, and California are managed under authority of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson-Stevens Act).
