摘要

Routine preoperative medical testing of patients undergoing cataract surgery iscommonly done, although its value is uncertain. The authors studied whether such routine testing had any value in minimizing operative and postoperative medical complications. 18,189 patients undergoing 19,557 cataract surgeries at nine centers were randomized on a per operation basis to receive or not receive a standard battery or preoperative medical tests (electrocardiogram and complete blood count, and measurement of serum electrolytes, urea nitrogen, creatinine, and glucose) in addition to history and physical examination. Medical adverse events and interventions that occurred on the day of surgery through seven days postoperatively were recorded.
