Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake of September 21, 1999: Reconnaissance Report

A devastating earthquake struck the central region of Taiwan last September 21,1999. Known as the Ji-Ji or Chi-Chi earthquake, it was the 921st earthquake to hit the country. Shortly after the calamity, the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research of the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering conducted a workshop to identify important short-term strategies and actions for post-earthquake restoration and research needs. These include ground motion attenuation; development of specific retrofit ideas for 1-3 story and 8-12 story buildings; system analysis for electric power and water systems; and development of a new system-related loss estimation methods.
