The paper reports evaluation results on possible water, soil, and aircontamination due to on-site wood treatment activities of Koppers Company, Inc. located in Oroville, Butte County, California. Site investigations by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) detected arsenic, benzene, pentrachlorophenol, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as contaminants. ATSDR concluded that past exposures to domestic well water, smoky air and on-site soils might have resulted to short-term reversible adverse health effects such as skin irritations, although the site poses no apparent public health hazards. The California Department of Health Services recommended that the community members reduce their exposures to potentially contaminated products as a preventive measure while further investigations continue.
