Big Sandy Creek Watershed (hydrologic unit code 050500007120) is 86,850 acreswhich drains into the Elk River at Clendenin. It is in the Central Allegheny Plateau major land area and is located in southeastern Roane, northwestern Clay, and northeastern Kanawha Counties. The percentage in each county is 75, 12, and 13 respectively. The watershed is approximately 17 miles long and eight miles wide. It lies on the north side of the Elk River and the main stream flows in a meandering east to west direction. Nineteen miles of Interstate 79 run parallel and in general proximity to Big Sandy Creek and the Right Fork of Big Sandy. The lower 43,000 linear feet of Big Sandy Creek is in Kanawha County and runs from below the Sandy Brae Golf Course at Osbornes Mills to the mouth at Clendenin. The stream ranges from 60 to 100 feet in width. The main tributaries which enter Big Sandy Ck. in this reach are Doctors Ck., Bufflick Run, Lefthand Ck., Thorofare Run, and Little Blue Ck. Most of the drainage area for Lefthand Ck. is from Roane County. The drainage area for the other tributaries is located in Kanawha County.
