Acoustical Methods for Detection of Buried Objects.

For underwater warfare and environmental protection reasons there is a great necessity to detect, identify, classify and neutralize objects on, and buried in, the sea floor. Existing commercially available instruments do not reliably detect buried objects, and there is need for development of new systems. At FOA we have studied how acoustical methods can be applied to solve the problem, and we give here a progress report from this work. In the research we have both conducted field experiments and used numerical modeling to understand the physics of the interaction of sound with the sea-bottom. The experiments have been carried out using parametric transducers to generate narrow beams with small footprints, which result in high echo-to-reverberation levels. We have recorded signals from different objects, at two sites with different bottom sediment. At both sites the objects were visible after slight processing of the signals. In addition, we succeeded in designing a detector, which at the second site detected the buried object on every pass.
