摘要

FMV (The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration) has become increasingly interested in taking advantage of the benefits of small scale terminal ballistic experiments and therefore a study to find out how well small scale experiments can predict the behavior of real full scale cases. In this study, the theoretical background of the most commonly used scaling law for terminal ballistic events, the so-called 'replica-modelling law,' is accounted for. The experimental results available to verify or dismiss this law are discussed, as are the consequences of deviations from this modelling law. Suggestions for experiments to investigate how different ways of simplifying the small-scale experiments influence the ability to predict the behavior of the real case are presented. In the open literature, relatively few experimental studies that address these issues were found, some of the most relevant being published by FOA. From these studies we conclude that small-scale results can be relied upon in penetration and perforation experiments with simple geometries if the scaling is done according to the prerequisites of the replica modelling law. There is little experimental data available to tell which simplifications in projectile and target geometry that could be allowed when more complicated geometries are involved. These issues must be studied further before simplified small-scale experiments can be used to reliably predict real full-scale performance.
