Absorbing WIPP Brines with a Cross-Linked Polyacrylate Absorbent

The Actinide Source Term Waste Test Program (STTP) experiment at Los AlamosNational Laboratory must dispose of about 400 gallons each of Brine A and Castile Brine which are the predominant types of brine found at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The brine is combined with rags, gloves, metals, rubber and other lab trash contaminated with plutonium, and is held in 15 each 65-gallon test containers. Disposal of the waste would be straightforward if the brine and trash could be left in the test containers and absorbed because no other waste streams such as mixed low-level waste would be created.
