摘要

The financial status of the Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program is evaluated on the basis of estimates made over several time periods: the next 10 years (short range), and the next 75 years (long range). The longrange period is further broken down into 25-year subperiods. Short-range estimates provide an indicator of the programs ability to pay benefits over the next several years. By monitoring these estimates, the short-range staff of the Office of the Chief Actuary can identify the possible need for legislative action in the near future. In contrast, long-range estimates provide tools for evaluating the size of the financial obligation that the OASDI program will place on future generations, and for determining whether current provisions for financing will be adequate in the long term.
