This dissertation covers the author's work in the fields of single-electrondevices and molecular magnets. In the first part, single-electron devices based on lithographically fabricated metal structures and semiconductor heterostructures are introduced. In Section 2, charging effects and single-electron tunneling in these systems are discussed. In the second part, the magnetization dynamics in the molecular magnet Mn(sub 12)-acetate is reviewed. A microscopic model for the magnetic molecules and the rich quantum dynamics of the magnetization is discussed in Sec. 3. The third part of the thesis consists of a review of the theoretical methods employed in Papers I-VI. In Section 4, a single
