Hypertension among Older Urban Native American Primary Care Patients: Prevalence, Comorbidity, Under-diagnosis, and Quality of Care.

Hypertension, a treatable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is increasing in prevalence and is often unrecognized and under-treated, particularly among older adults. Little is known about hypertension or its care among the rapidly growing older, urban American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) population. This study estimates the prevalence of hypertension, as well as concomitant cardiac risk factors, complications, and comorbid disease among older, urban AI/ANs. We also assess the frequency of undiagnosed hypertension, and describe the quality of care for hypertension.
