On October 4 and 5, 2000, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) had the honor of hosting 'Technologies for Successful Aging,' a White House Forum sponsored by the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The Forum not only brought together stakeholder agencies but also reached out to corporations, advocacy groups, and consumers with the challenge of broadly thinking about what we can do now to positively affect 2010 and beyond. The result was an invigorating two days and an ongoing commitment to building a federal research agenda to prepare for the future. The Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development is very proud to present proceedings from the Forum. They are unusual, but they represent not just the research or even the healthcare perspective. Rather, they incorporate the views and concerns of the many fields: economics, social activism, technology transfer, development, administration, that must listen to each other and work together to tackle the daunting task of a rapidly shifting demographic in our country's population
