Institutionalizing the Use of Research in a Local Police Department: A Continuing Partnership

This project sought to develop and institutionalize a learning capacity within the Forest Park Police Department. Building on an earlier research partnership funded by the National Institute of Justice, the project implemented a computerized mapping system for the identification of problems and the assessment of responses by the police department. A collaborative effort between the University of Cincinnati and the Forest Park Police Department was undertaken with the goal of developing the skills and resources for continued analyses within the police department. University researchers cooperated with administrative staff of the police department to develop a geographic database, establish routine data collection and reporting capabilities, and assist in the distribution of GIS information. Over the span of the project, university personnel worked as facilitators, instructors, and consultants to the department.
