Residents of Hammond, Indiana petitioned the Agency for Toxic Substances andDisease Registry (ATSDR) to conduct a health assessment in response to concerns of child brain cancer and emissions from the Keil Chemical plant. Specific concerns were the release of 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) and vinyl chloride during the Pyro-Chek process started in 1980, ATSDR reviewed air, water, and soil data provided by state and local environmental agencies and from Keil Chemical. ATSDR conducted an exposure investigation in cooperation with the Hammond Department of Environmental Management and volunteer community members to assess current air emissions from the plant.
