Auto Radio Override Alert System for Emergency Vehicles and for Railroad-Highway Grade Crossings.

The project shall develop, test and perform pre-service deployment of a transceiver override system for active automobile radios to warn the drivers in front of approaching emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, police, ambulance and trains nearing grade crossings. The system shall be designed with directional antennas with minimal interference to radio receivers in adjacent areas and shall transmit time-gated emergency messages. An operational test shall be performed to examine the performance of the systems in Minneapolis and in coordination with Minnesota fire departments and the DOT Guidestar team. The research performed under this contract demonstrated that the message of the Auto Radio Override Alert System would reach automobile drivers who do not hear the sirens because they have their radios on, their windows are shut, and their air conditioners are running. The tests validate the concept of transmitting an emergency message from an emergency vehicle for a distance of approximately 1,000 feet in the line of travel.
