Strategies for Success: Reinventing Cities for the 21st Century

This report is a blueprint for cities making the transition from the old to thenew economy. Hopefully, communities can learn from the successful experiences of otherscase studies that provide tangible examples of creative economic development initiatives that cities are implementing throughout the Nation. This report describes strategies that cities are employing to successfully manage the transition to this new high-tech, information-based networked economy. It goes behind the numbers contained in HUDs State of the Cities reports, detailing the specific strategies that cities have adopted in recent years to replace the jobs that were lost as their traditional economic base declined or disappeared. The report is built around a series of case studies of cities in all parts of the country that have found ways to boost their local economy and jobs lost when their older industrial base declined. We have selected mid-sized cities since the success stories in the larger cities are well-known, and often are not transferable to smaller cities.
