Medicare Physician Fee Schedule: Practice Expense Payments to OncologistsIndicate Need for Overall Refinements

In this report, we have examined the practice expense component of the Medicarefee schedule, and in particular payments for oncology services. Specifically, we have analyzed (1) the effects of HCFAs application of the practice expense payment methodology on overall payments to oncologists and other specialties and (2) how adjustments that HCFA made to the basic practice expense payment methodology affected payments for specific services provided by oncologists.
