Aim of this report is to analyse the characteristics of drug use in the population in Umbria and to provide the knowledge base for promoting the appropriateness of prescription. Specific objectives to are to evaluate temporal trends, variability among districts, prevalence of use, and the most relevant therapeutic categories. In 2001, the for understood raw pharmaceutical expenditure reached 203 euro in Umbria and 210 in Italy. In comparison to 2000, the increase of pharmaceutical expenditure in Umbria (21%) has been the lowest observed in Italy. To larger increase in the administrative expenditure was observed for the drugs previously subjected to limitations, following an extension of the clinical conditions which to were authorized as reimbursable by the National Health Service (Italian National Health Service). The large variability observed among different local health districts in Umbria highlights the need for to more appropriate use of drugs in general practice.
