The Early Treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ETROP) Study tests the hypothesis that earlier treatment in selected, high risk cases will result in a better visual outcome than conventionally-timed treatment. Treatment consists of ablation of retina anterior to the advancing ridge of ROP. The primary outcome in the ETROP Study is vision (grating visual acuity), measured using Teller acuity cards at 9 months corrected age, with structural outcome at 9 months as a secondary outcome. Structural outcome is also measured at 6 months corrected age. Because considerable visual and ocular development occurs in infants and young children after 9 months of age, we hypothesize that there may be long-term differences between the earlier-treated, high risk eyes and the eyes treated in the conventional manner, that will not be apparent at the 9-month follow-up examination.
