This report describes the progress and outcomes of the AHRQ Institutional Training Innovation Incentive Award No. R25 HS 0987, which was awarded in 1998 for curriculum and faculty development in Health Services Research across Disciplines (HSRAD).This was a major conceptual step forward for our UCSF training program, as past experience had suggested that an effective health policy researcher development program required a broad-based multidisciplinary setting in which various approaches could be examined, evaluated and used to address critical concerns of health policy. While the scholars in the program have always come from a broad cross-section of disciplines, there had not been a concerted effort to focus curriculum and research training specifically across disciplines and methodological perfective. The purpose of the innovation incentive award was to explore, develop and implement a cross-disciplinary and integrative research component for our curriculum$ to facilitate research interactions among scholars from different theoretical backgrounds, trained in different methodologies, and to coordinate and integrate multiple disciplinary approaches to research addressed to the rapidly changing health environment.
