摘要

Ethnic-specific Culturally Sensitive Health Care Inventories were developed to evaluate levels of patient-defined cultural sensitivity in health care at community-based primary care clinics. Specifically, inventories were developed for use by Black American, Hispanic American, and White American patients at such clinics to evaluate levels of patient-defined cultural sensitivity in the health care that they receive. Additionally, an inventory was developed that primary care physicians who serve these culturally diverse patients can use to self-evaluate their own levels of patient-defined cultural sensitivity in the health care that they provide to such patients. Pilot versions of these inventories were based on focus group data from low SES. African American, Hispanic American, and White American primary care clinic patients (N=135) who identified (1) behaviors and attitudes of physicians that promote comfort with and trust of physicians and that show respect for patients' culture, and (2) clinic characteristics that make patients feel comfortable at these clinics. The final versions of these inventories include only the 60 to 65 percent of items on each inventory that a second group of 240 patients similar to the focus group participants rated as important. Research on the reliability and validity of these inventories is in progress.
