Dr. Jones welcomed the group to this joint meeting, sponsored by the NHBPEP/NHLBI and the AHA, and asked participants to introduce themselves and their particular interest in the topic of blood pressure (BP) measurement. The group included representatives from Government agencies, academia, and industry. Dr. Jones stated the need for original thinking on how to improve BP measurement. He noted that the participants recognize the challenges and clinical problems that result from inadequate measurement, though they all come with their own biases about which type of measurement they prefer (e.g., mercury manometers, aneroid instruments, etc.).
