The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD or the Department) is the Federal agency responsible for national policy and programs that address America's housing needs; that improve and develop the Nation's communities; and enforce fair housing laws. HUDs mission is to ensure a decent, safe and sanitary home and suitable living environment for every American. HUD has programs to create opportunities for homeownership; provide housing assistance for low-income persons; programs to create, rehabilitate and maintain the nations affordable housing; enforce fair housing laws; help homeless persons; spur economic growth in distressed neighborhoods; and help local communities meet their development needs.
