摘要

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been involved in the long term banking of biological specimens for over 20 years. The U.S. National Biomonitoring Specimen Bank (NBSB) was initiated in 1979 from the pilot Environmental Specimen Bank Program under the sponsorship of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (Wise and Zeisler, 1985). It is maintained at the NIST Research Reactor Building in Gaithersburg, Maryland and the Satellite Facility in Charleston, South Carolina. Specimen banking provides researchers the ability to look at environmental trends over long periods of time through retrospective analysis of archived samples.
