Issues in Food Assistance. Private Provision of Food Aid: The Emergency Food Assistance System

Although Federal programs provide the bulk of food assistance in the United States, with benefits worth more than $32 billion in 2000, many needy households also utilize private, nonprofit, charitable organizations that provide emergency food in their communities. Yet policymakers have had limited information available to them on these organizations, which comprise the emergency food assistance system (EFAS). This issues brief reports findings from the first comprehensive government study of the EFAS.
