Ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys over the driving lane of newly constructed concrete road was performed to evaluate its ability to determine the subsurface voids or contamination (mud balls) areas. The bulk of the work was completed utilizing 1.5 groundcoupled antenna, with additional data collected with a 1.0 GHz air-launched antenna for comparison. The original purposes of this research include (a) a determination of contamination (mud balls) areas, (b) a drawing showing layout of contamination, (c) an approximation of total area of contamination, (d) updating the above drawing to include depth information for each anomaly if possible, and (e) an explanation and samples of investigation techniques and procedure. However, the results show that the only ground-coupled antenna can pick up problems in the pavement, but does not appear to have the 'clear' ability to distinguish bad areas from good unless they are very near the surface. Results also suggest that a further concrete slab test may confirm the ability of GPR to aid in assessing these problems.
