摘要

The authors tested the efficacy of an animal activated pop-up scare crow and a monofilament barrier fence at reducing deer use and browse damage to 12 acre soybean fields. Deer use was measured by observation and remote recordings with video camera recorders. Deer use of control fields was greatest followed by monofilament fields, and pop-up scare crow fields. Soybean height and weight was greatest in scare crow fields followed by monofilament and control fields suggesting this method provided better protection. Scarecrow activations increased over time in all 3 animal-activated scarecrow plots suggesting deer were habituating to the device. We suggest that an animal-activated scarecrow device may be useful for short-term deterrence of deer from small areas.
