摘要

Concurrent Engineering (CE) Process is one of the most important means to achieve competitive and economical products. To maintain an efficient CE-process is a big challenge in the field of subcontract manufacture. The goal of this study was to identify the most typical CE- related problems in the Finnish metal industry. Special emphasis was placed on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their subcontract manufacture processes. Additionally, the goal was to find some success stories and to identify the underlying success factors. The study was carried out in association with 12 Finnish SMEs in the metal industry. The research project was divided into three parts: (1) an interview study to characterise the general status of present CE-processes, (2) a questionnaire for the participating subcontractors to examine their current CE-processes in more detail and (3) a case study of a real manufacturing process. The results of the study show that only 10-15 % of the main contractors involved in this study were maintaining a continuous CE-process. On the other hand, the subcontractors were willing to increase cooperation.
