Purpose: To assess communication outcomes from computer screening for domestic violence (DV). Scope: We have previously shown computer prompts increase documentation of domestic violence (DV). This study assesses mechanisms and generalizability of these results at two socioeconomically diverse emergency departments (EDs). Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of a computer-based health survey in a non emergent group of women ages 18-65 in an urban academic and a suburban community hospital ED. Visits were audiotaped and coded for rates of DV discussion and disclosure.
