Revisiting the Rise of the Violent Female Offender: Drugs and Violent Crime

The aim in this paper is to explore whether there is empirical support for the new violent female offender contention, particularly in the context of female drug use and violent crime. We first examine the literature on the gender/drugs/crime/violence nexus and then analyze drug use patterns and criminal histories of a sample of newly arrested females in three urban areas in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Westmoreland County (a suburb of Pittsburgh)).
