Clinical and technological advances in health care and health service delivery are occurring at astonishing speeds. While it is well-known that advances in health care are adopted at widely varying rates, the reasons for this are poorly understood. This project was a conference conceived to explore the diffusion of innovations in health care. It was held in Washington, DC January 27-28, 2003. The conference attracted an exceptionally strong group of speakers and a high-level audience of 180 people from 133 organizations and health care facilities. Feedback was highly positive. Three original papers were commissioned for the conference and a targeted literature review was conducted. Those are likely to prove useful to researchers for years to come. We believe that speakers and attendees, many in a position to affect change in their organizations, will integrate thinking and strategies targeted at diffusion issues into their overall efforts to improve the delivery and quality of health care. A conference proceedings report is in preparation and will be ready for distribution (to some 3,000 people) in September 2003.
