Factors Associated with Gaps in Osteoporosis Treatment;Final rept. 1 Apr 02-30 Sep 03

The purpose of this document is to characterize gap between guidelines and practice for bone mineral density measurement and osteoporosis treatment in older patients after a fracture, to aid in designing more effective future interventions. Members of a not-for-profit group-model HMO-women aged 50 or older (n=3,182) and men aged 65 and older (n=1,171)-with a diagnosis of new study-defined fracture. The HMO's administrative databases and clinical electronic medical record provided demographic, diagnostic, pharmacy, and BMD utilization data. Multiple logistic regressions were used to evaluate pre-fracture factors for their association with osteoporosis treatment in the 6 month post-fracture period.
