Informed Consent and Health Literacy: Workshop Summary. Held in Washington, DC on July 28, 2014.

The workshop’s first panel provided an overview of why informed consent is important and reviewed some of the best practices for obtaining informed consent. Jeremy Sugarman, the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Bioethics and Medicine and deputy director for medicine of the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University, spoke about the ethical imperative to gain informed consent from patients and research participants. Linda Aldoory, Endowed Chair and Director of the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy and associate professor in behavioral and community health at the University of Maryland, College Park, discussed a commissioned paper reviewing the impact of informed consent regulations on health-literate communications that she and her team wrote for the roundtable. An open discussion followed the two presentations.
