The project consisted of a series of studies examining what practitioners of primary care do, how that is changing, what influences these changes, and what are the implications for policy. The studies tested hypotheses concerning the effects of physician, patient, visit characteristics, practice setting, and environmental characteristics on outcome variables such as prescribing and other treatment patterns and duration of visit. The studies primarily employed regression analysis of data from the 1973-1995 National Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys (NAMCS).
