Evaluation of Ischemic Heart Disease in Monroe County;Final rept. 30 Sep 96-29 Sep 98

We aimed to better understand health service utilization patterns and outcomes related to coronary artery disease (CAD) in Monroe County, New York. The project also sought to define and describe the 'burden' of disease in this area and identify corresponding community needs. Its ultimate goal was to develop a model approach to analyzing CAD in this locality that is generalizable to other communities' medical conditions. This was multi-level analysis of CAD mortality and procedure rates (coronary artery bypass and angiography) in a metropolitan Upstate New York community with a population approximately 730,000. Both Community- and Individual-Community-level patterns of incidence and procedures were examined. The methods consisted of: A combination of Census, Statewide Planning and Cooperative System Data and local health department data and used to examine age- and gender-adjusted patterns at the community-level$ A series of univariate and multivariate regression models were developed to determine the effect of independent variables on heart disease measures, focusing on the affects of gender, race, and socioeconomic status. A second-series analysis considered only 'avoidable mortality,' i.e. mortality to populations aged less than 75 years.
