FISMA mandates two annual reviews of an agency's information security program: one conducted by the agency iteself and a second independent evaluation performewd by the agency's Office of Inspector General (OIG). The objective of the FISMA evaluation was to determine whether the Department's information security program and practices comply with the act's requirements, and thereby protect the information and information systems on which the federal government depends.
