Western States Medical Monographs. Persistent Hypocalcemia in the AIDS Patient: A Case Study.

Hypocalcemia may be present in a large percentage of severely ill patients. It may also be the first indication of AIDS. However, in an otherwise actutely ill patient, this diagnosis may be overlooked as the hypocalcemia may be attributed to any number of other comorbidities (i.e., renal insufficiency, drug interactions, neoplasm, opportunistic infections, etc.). The authors will examine a case of a middle-age HIV positive male, with complex social factors who presents with repeated episodes of symptomatic hypocalcemia. The scope of the work will also discuss the proposed mechanisms for these findings and the management of this condition.
