Increasing Community Participation in Health Services: A Guide for Mobilizing Community Support for the Basic Package of Health Services in Afghanistan

Building community commitment and involvement in the Afghan health program is the best way to ensure sustainability. In this respect, the Afghan national leadership has great hopes for the future of the national health system. It is also critical to mobilize local communities and leaders to support the Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) at the grassroots level, which will ultimately benefit millions of Afghans who have lacked health services for years. Programs in other developing countries in Asia have demonstrated that communities can be mobilized to guide and support health services for their own people. Afghanistans millions of poor and underserved, in desperate need of health care, deserve no less.
