Charting the Course in End-of-Life-Care: From Research to Policy and Practice Final rept. (June 30, 2003-Feb. 1, 2004)

The purpose of this project and conference was to bring together clinicians, researchers, and policy makers to discuss a research agenda and opportunities for end-of-life studies that builds on existing state of the field advances and responds to the needs of care providers and policy makers. New knowledge in care was disseminated, as well as research methodologies effective in studying end-of-life issues. Scope: 235 participants including nurses, researchers, physicians, attorneys, chaplains, social workers, pharmacists, administrators, psychologists and students were present. Methods: The conference featured expert plenary session and breakout speakers to provide presentations involving state of the field in end-of-life and palliative care. Representatives from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute for Nursing Research participated in a panel discussion about funding opportunities in end-of-life studies. Research papers and research posters selected through a competitive abstract submission process representing current research activity in the field were presented. Results: Topics presented to provide state of the field updates included compassion fatigue, pain and symptom management, spirituality in end-of-life care, cultural diversity in end-of-life care, access to end-of-life and palliative care as well as research methodologies in end-of-life care. Funding opportunities were explored and participants were given opportunities for collaboration with colleagues and funding agencies. The participants evaluations were positive and the conference met its stated goals. The conference contributed to participants professional knowledge.
