Transit-Oriented Development Workshop: Synthesis

There is growing consensus about the need to be more proactive in decision making in regards to better coordinating public and private resources. One component in this way of thinking is to pursue more coordination of transit and land use under a concept termed, transit-oriented development (TOD). TOD neighborhoods tend to encourage walking, are linked very well to transit for meeting needs inside and outside of the neighborhood and provide a sense of place. The benefits of these neighborhoods are many, but include the fact that fewer automobiles are needed. Several communities are actively pursuing transitoriented development. This report documents a TOD workshop where elements of planning, development and implementation of transit-focused communities were described. This work identifies several potential sites for transit-oriented development using Houston, Texas, as a case study. Both a bus and rail example are included.
